The art of rejection

August 30, 2006

Ia atentie acilea:
„Dear Russell,

This year we have interviewed a great number of talented applicants. The task of making a final shortlist has been harder than ever.

I am afraid you have marginally lost in a situation where you were a very good candidate. I am extremely sorry we can’t take your application any further.

Thank you for the time and effort you have put into your application. I very much enjoyed meeting you and I hope our paths will cross again one day.

Please don’t hesitate to write to me if I can help or advise you in any way ” (Ogilvy&Mather)

„[…] We felt from the time we had with you that you have many of the skills we are looking for. In particular, the way you have taken the initiative and enterprise upon yourself to organise the venues for your band and the understanding you displayed of how diplomacy is often called for in business situations. However, we did feel that you did not ‘sell yourself ‘ to us as forcefully as you might have, considering all your achievements in recent years. A large part of an account handler’s job is in persuading people to do things. We believed that you were capable of this, but needed a bit more convincing than you gave us […]”

Feedback, one-on-one, real people, real conversation, real advice, no bullshit.

So true
